Although opposition to the Patriot Act is is born from misunderstanding and fear of its provisions, the Patriot Act and those who employ its use adhere to the Fourth and First Amendments, do not misuse their powers, control metadata collection, and are indispensable in maintaining national security. Only one terrorist is needed to cause an attack of massive and deadly proportions, and the price that must be paid in order to ensure that terrorist’s discovery must be determined. The Patriot Act both enables and limits the government's ability to pry into citizens' lives, but, in the end, the law recognizes that, in some circumstances, national security must take precedence over personal security. National security is personal security, after all.
